BELGIUM’S GOLDEN GENERATION FAILED AGAIN

Belgium have been the number one team on the FIFA Rankings for some years and great things were expected of the team at the ongoing Euro 2020 tournament. In the end, the fans were left disappointed again by the golden generation. Belgium might never have the opportunity of winning a major tournament again if the cycle ends for the current set of players known as the golden generation.

The Red Devils of Belgium have never had so many talented players at once like the current team which boasts of quality players like Inter Milan striker RomeluLukaku, Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, Real Madrid player Eden Hazard, Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld, Real Madrid shot stopper Thibaut Courtois and many more. The Red Devils have quality in every department especially in midfield and attack but they have so far failed to really impress at a major tournament till date.

Belgium skipper Eden Hazard and his teammates were able to match the 1986 set of Red Devils when they reached the semifinals at the last World Cup tournament in Russia and they went slightly better by finishing in third place but the general consensus is that the team should be doing better. Since the cycle for the golden generation started, Belgium have reached the semifinals once and that was in Russia three years ago. Belgium posted their best result at a major tournament by finishing fourth at the 1986 FIFA World Cup tournament in Mexico until the record was slightly improved by the current set of players in Russia. It is important to point out that the current team has better players than the ’86 set.

Eden Hazard and the other players failed again at a major tournament with their exit at the hands of Italy at Euro 2020 on Friday and the World Cup tournament in Qatar next year represents the last chance for the golden generation to win a major trophy in international football.
